Another Hair Loss Option?

Before and after picture of SMP

It seems plenty of men are happy with their fate of baldness but could there be another hair loss option for people like me?

Complain, Complain, Complain

I used to complain like a baby to my partner that “it just wasn’t fair” when I saw a senior citizen with a lush, full head of hair.  Why did I have to care so much?  I’ve thought about this a lot. Was there some deep insecurity inside of me that caused me to fear losing my hair so much?

However, the more I researched this issue and interviewed bald men, I found out that with few exceptions, it really bothers them.  Some men have deep scars of hurt and insecurity connected to their hair loss, especially if they started losing their hair in their 20’s.

And for the most part, women report they are very concerned, even if they are forced to deal with a small amount of thinning hair.  The problem arises when we start to study solutions.

Hair Loss Options

On the low cost, low effort end of the spectrum available to both men and women, there is a dust-like product one can shake into their remaining hair to create a thicker, fuller look. Needless to say, this works to a degree, but its messy and very temporary.

On the high end of the spectrum, women have wigs and men have toupees as discussed in a previous blog post. And along with that they have all the inconvenience and high cost associated with going that route.

Everyone is Looking

Whether or not you spend time in the spotlight, hair loss can make it feel like your head and hair are the center of attention. My entire career has been spent in front of crowds of people. From being a schoolteacher, to speaking to large crowds of executives at major corporations as a corporate trainer ~ all eyes were on me.

I started losing hair in my early thirties. I was a young father of two small children. It was critical for my career to look confident and put-together, and my baldness prevented me from being as confident as I desired to be.

I wished there were a better way to deal with my own personal hair struggles and with my self-image. I was left to hide behind expensive, high-maintenance hair pieces and I spent hours carefully combing, spraying, and styling what hair I did have so I could conceal my baldness. It was a pain I wouldn’t wish upon anyone.

Scalp Micropigmentation

Then one day I discovered scalp micropigmentation (SMP). I was mindlessly scrolling through social media videos when I realized that the sharply dressed men and women with perfect hairlines were actually sporting permanent ink on their scalps. I wondered if this could finally be the end of my struggle with baldness.

How Does it Work?

I accidentally stumbled upon this new process that changed my life. SMP is a lightly invasive tattoo process that uses tiny ink impressions placed in the scalp to create the look of a full, robust hairline cut very closely. Each impression resembles an individual hair follicle, and the effect is very realistic, attractive, and low maintenance.

Some men choose to have the procedure early in the hair thinning process, forever avoiding complete baldness. Ever notice how some men have that head that says, “I could have a full head of hair, but I’ve chosen to shave it short?” For some a true statement, for others it’s the SMP look.  Either way, it’s an increasingly popular choice for men who want to exude confidence and power and no longer worry about their hair.

Next week we will discuss scalp micropigmentation in detail, what it is, and how it works.  And I will share more details of my personal experience with the SMP procedure itself.
